Homemade Linen Spray Recipe Using Essential Oils

This post is not sponsored.

Introduction

Linen sprays are a versatile powerhouse around the home. Not only do linen sprays deodorize and freshen fabrics and clothing, they also act as a vehicle for distributing essential oils. Essential oils offer various antibacterial and antifungal properties that are beneficial to creating a clean and healthy living environment. What is more, making homemade linen spray is quick, easy, and budget friendly! I consider this a micro-skill for those looking to add homemaking skills to their repertoire. So let’s jump into it!

What Is Linen Spray All About

Linen sprays are a powerhouse for the home. From freshening up bedspreads and laundry to deodorizing clothes and shoes, linen sprays have countless uses. I appreciate that making homemade linen spray is so budget friendly, simple, and effective.

Budget Friendly

This homemade body spray recipe offers a budget friendly and effective alternative to many of the popular linen sprays on the market. The price for this spray comes out to approximately $0.90 per fluid ounce, while a similar spray from Bath and Body Works costs as much as $2.80 per fluid ounce. I provide a cost breakdown for the recipe I am sharing in this post below.

Cost Breakdown

  • Approximately 1.5 ounces of witch hazel: $0.30 (current pricing for witch hazel “Equate” brand from Walmart)

  • Approximately 1 teaspoon of essential oils: $0.50 (depending on the amount of essential oils and brand you choose)

  • 2 ounce spray bottle: $1.00

  • Tap water: negligible

  • Total: $0.90 per fluid ounce

Simple

The only equipment required for this linen spray includes a small spray bottle and a funnel. Essential oils and witch hazel can be acquired from your local supermarket, or purchased online.

Effective

I have noticed a marked difference in the freshness of my home and sheets after using this spray. The witch hazel works to deodorize, while the custom blend of essential oils leaves behind a pleasant odor long after the spray has dried.

About The Ingredients

Witch hazel has antibacterial properties, making it a great choice for a deodorizing spray. Combined in tandem with essential oils, witch hazel linen spray can be customized to target specific concerns around the home. Below is a short list of common essential oils.

Essential Oil Options

  • Cinnamon Bark: helps target airborne bacteria and mold

  • Clove: has antibacterial and antifungal properties

  • Lavender: helps with tension, anxiety, and de-stressing

  • Spearmint: helps ease migraines and combat fatigue

  • Tea Tree: has antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties

  • Vanilla Oleoresin: helps combat stress and anxiety

One of my favorite blends is lavender and vanilla. This blend is a simple combination I like to use year round in my home. I find the scent combination both clean and relaxing.

Scent Customization

The essential oils you choose to add to your linen spray can be customized. Adjusting ratios and combinations of essential oils offers countless options for scent profiles. In addition, essential oils offer various benefits for the home, including antibacterial properties and stress relieving capabilities. Selecting one oil or a combination of essential oils to create blends that target the specific concerns you have in your home is a fun avenue to explore. Multiple sprays can also be created to target specific concerns in the home. For example, a bottle of tea tree linen spray can be used to target stinky shoe odors, while a lavender and vanilla option sits on the nightstand to be used as a prep for a relaxing night’s sleep.

Seasonal Scent Profiles

Creating blends based on the season is another fun and creative avenue to explore! Some ideas include cinnamon and pumpkin spice scents for the fall season. These oils can be used around the home to freshen the air and add a touch of the cozy season. Around Christmas, spruce, pine, and peppermint scents are some fun options to explore. The important thing is to play around, find scents that you enjoy, and have fun! There is no right or wrong way to create custom sprays.

Fun Gift Idea

Linen sprays also make fantastic gifts for Christmas and housewarming. Create custom blends, bottle them, and attach a nice tag and bow for a thoughtful and practical gift.

Uses

I am always finding new uses for homemade linen sprays. Here is a small list of ways I currently utilize this spray around my home.

Linen Spray Uses Around The Home

  • Spray on sheets and pillows to freshen before bed.

  • Spritz in shoes to help kill unpleasant odors.

  • Use a few sprays in your gym bag to help combat smells.

  • Spray on towels directly after pulling them out of the drier. Fold and enjoy fresh smelling towels later in the week.

  • Spray in the air around your home to add a nice mist of deodorizing witch hazel and essential oils to the rooms.

  • Use a few sprays over freshly vacuumed carpet to help deodorize and freshen.

  • Use to freshen clothes to rewear to minimize washings, where applicable.

  • Spray on bra inserts to deodorize and freshen.

  • Spray in coat closets to freshen up in between deeper cleans.

  • Use as a potpourri spray.

  • Spray on car upholstery to freshen.

  • Give sprays as gifts.

Ingredients and Instructions

Made from just three ingredients, this simple spray can be mixed together in seconds.

Materials

  • Witch hazel (this can be found in the first aide section of your supermarket, or purchased online)

  • Water (tap water works fine)

  • Essential oils of your choice

  • A small spray bottle (I use the small bottles found in the travel-size section of your local supermarket)

Directions

Clean and rinse the spray bottle you intend to use for the linen spray. Using a funnel, carefully pour witch hazel approximately ⅔ of the way up the side of the bottle. Fill up most of the way with water. Ensure that a gap remains for adding essential oils, if using, and for shaking the spray. Add a few drops of your preferred essential oils. Tightly close the lid to the spray bottle. Shake vigorously until the essential oils are suspended as small droplets in the water and witch hazel mixture. Congratulations, your linen spray is now ready to use around the home! It’s that simple!

To use, hold the spray bottle at arm's length, pointing away from your face. Spray as desired. Be careful using around wood furniture, as the droplets could ruin the surface finish.

Caution: Use care when handling essential oils. These oils are concentrated and can irritate the skin. Always follow safety instructions on the essential oil bottles. These oils can cause allergic reactions. Consult a dermatologist and take proper, common sense steps to protect your health. Be careful spraying around small children and pets.
